How Lodg files your IR3 return
If you're a sole trader in New Zealand, your annual income tax return is called an IR3. Lodg prepares and files it for you — here's how it works.
What Lodg does
-
Categorises your income and expenses from your connected bank account throughout the year.
-
Calculates your net profit, GST adjustments (if registered), home office and motor vehicle claims, and ACC.
-
Prepares your IR3 with all the right schedules.
-
Sends you a draft to review and approve.
-
Files the IR3 directly with IRD on your behalf once you approve it.
What we need from you
See the article "Tax return: what we need from you" for the full checklist. The short version: any income or expenses that didn't go through your connected bank, plus a complete Lodg profile.
When it's due
-
If you're a Lodg client (linked agent), your IR3 is due by 31 March of the year after the tax year ends.
-
If you're filing yourself without a tax agent, it's due by 7 July.
We aim to have your draft ready well before the deadline so you have time to review it.
What you'll see
Once we've prepared your IR3, you'll get an email with a link to review the draft. You can:
-
Approve it as-is.
-
Reply with corrections or questions.
After approval, we file with IRD and send you confirmation. Any tax owing or refund will then sit in your IRD account.
