Do I need a business bank account?
It's not a legal requirement in New Zealand — as a sole trader, you can use your personal bank account for business. However, keeping your business and personal finances separate makes a significant difference when it comes to tax time, record keeping, and staying organised.
Why a separate business account is strongly recommended
1. Easier tax filing When all your business income and expenses flow through one account, it's simple to see exactly what you earned and spent during the year. Mixing business and personal transactions in the same account means manually sorting through every single line item — which takes time and increases the chance of missing something.
2. Cleaner IRD records IRD requires you to be able to substantiate your income and expenses if they ever review your return. A dedicated business account provides a clear, clean record that makes any IRD query straightforward to respond to.
3. Faster bank connection with Lodg When you connect your bank account to Lodg, a dedicated business account means only relevant transactions are imported. This makes auto-categorisation more accurate and reduces the number of transactions you need to review manually.
4. Better cash flow visibility Knowing exactly how much money is your business income — rather than it being mixed with personal spending — helps you plan for tax payments, provisional tax instalments, and day-to-day cash flow.
5. More professional Paying suppliers and receiving payments through a business account (often with your business name) looks more professional to clients and vendors.
What type of account should I open?
Most New Zealand banks offer everyday business accounts. You don't need anything complex — a standard business transaction account with online banking is all you need to get started.
Some banks offer accounts specifically for sole traders or freelancers with no monthly fee, so it's worth comparing options. New Zealand banks that offer business accounts include ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Westpac, and Kiwibank.
What if I've been using my personal account?
That's fine — many people start that way. The best time to switch is at the start of a new tax year (1 April), so your records are clean from that point forward. If you connect your personal account to Lodg, you'll just need to mark any personal transactions as non-business when they appear in your dashboard.
💡 Lodg can help you reconcile your transactions regardless of whether you use a personal or business account — we'll help you identify what's business and what's not.
